People having the cardiovascular disease are more likely to have worse COVID-19 symptoms due to metabolic syndrome. In fresh research, researchers have found that people suffering from metabolic syndrome are at risk of getting severely affected by coronavirus disease.
New research highlights have shown that obesity, hypertension, and diabetes in particular cover more percentage in death from COVID-19 than heart or lung problems.
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), some people are at most risks of severe diseases including older adults and people suffering from other medical conditions are at severe risks. People suffering from these medical conditions have found difficult to be cured.
People having metabolic syndrome with 5 times more chances to be admitted in intensive care units required ventilation or develop Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).
What does Metabolic Syndrome mean?
According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, metabolic syndrome is a combined term for persons having the risk of heart disease and other health problems.
Five specific medical conditions that can collectively be called metabolic syndrome are as follows-
- Obesity
- Diabetes or pre-diabetes
- Hypertriglyceridemia.
- Hypertension.
- Low HDL (High- density lipoprotein)
Persons having metabolic syndrome is likely to have on-going low inflammation in their body. Metabolic syndrome are caused to deteriorate recovering of the patient and may be linked with death.
The researchers compared the condition of patients with metabolic syndrome with people not having it. They found that intensive care units, ventilation, the development of Acute Respiratory Disease Syndrome(ARDS), and the required sets of conditions of people having COVID-19 and metabolic syndrome both.

- 56% require intensive care units.
- 48% require ventilation.
- 37% develop ARDS.
- 26% died due to COVID-19.
After researching various accountable variables- including sex, age race, and the hospital’s location- the researchers have aggregated that people with metabolic syndrome found a significantly higher probability of dying from COVID-19.
